Shared hosting vs VPS vs dedicated hosting: which is right for you?

These three names describe how much of a machine you get and how much of it you look after. Pick by how your site behaves, not by which sounds most powerful.

Shared hosting: a managed apartment

Your site sits on a server with other sites, and the host maintains everything. It is the cheapest option and the right one for the overwhelming majority of websites — brochure sites, blogs, portfolios and small stores.

  • Lowest cost and nothing to administer.
  • Control panel, one-click installs and automatic updates.
  • Resources are pooled, so very heavy sites can feel limits.

VPS hosting: your own floor of the building

A virtual private server reserves cores, memory and storage that nobody else can use, and gives you root access. You choose the operating system and software versions. Unless you buy a managed plan, patching and monitoring are yours.

  • Guaranteed resources and full control.
  • Right for custom applications, staging environments and developer workflows.
  • Needs someone comfortable with a command line, or a managed add-on.

Dedicated hosting: the whole building

An entire physical machine reserved for you. It makes sense for very high sustained traffic, strict compliance requirements or workloads that must not share hardware. It is the most expensive and the most demanding to run.

Not sure which type you need?

Compare shared, business, cloud and VPS plans side by side — or ask an engineer and get a straight answer.

The two options that sit in between

Business hosting gives you guaranteed processing power and memory while staying fully managed — the usual right answer for a growing site. Cloud hosting lets you add resources within minutes, which suits unpredictable traffic and campaigns.

How to decide in two minutes

Answer these and the choice makes itself.

  • Do you want to administer a server? If no, stay managed.
  • Do you need specific software versions or root access? If yes, VPS.
  • Do you hit resource limits monthly? Move to business or cloud hosting.
  • Is sustained traffic very high, or is isolated hardware required? Dedicated.

Frequently asked questions

Is shared hosting good enough for a business website?
For most brochure and small-business sites, yes. Move to business hosting when you take frequent orders or bookings and want guaranteed resources.
Is a VPS faster than shared hosting?
It is more consistent, because your resources are reserved. A well-tuned shared plan can feel just as quick for a light site.
Can I upgrade between hosting types?
Yes, and you do not rebuild anything. We move the site and schedule the switch to avoid downtime.
