How to migrate your website to a new hosting provider

Moving hosts sounds risky and rarely is. The trick is to build the site fully at the new host, test it there, and only then send visitors across.

Before you move: three checks

Two minutes now avoids a bad afternoon.

  • Confirm you can log in to the domain registrar, not just the old host.
  • List every service on the domain: website, email, subdomains, shop, redirects.
  • Note your current DNS records, especially MX records for email.

Take a full backup you control

Download the website files and a database export, and keep a copy off both hosts. Even when your new host migrates for you, an independent copy is your safety net.

Rebuild at the new host and test there

Upload the files, import the database, update the configuration and open the site on a temporary address or by editing your own hosts file. Click through the important pages, submit a form and, if it is a store, complete a test order.

Move email before you move the website

Create the mailboxes at the new host, copy existing mail across by IMAP, and only then change the MX records. Email interruptions are what people actually notice.

Our engineers handle the migration, the email and the DNS switch, then check every page before we call it done.

Switch DNS at a quiet time

Lower the TTL on your records a day ahead, then switch nameservers or A records during your quietest hours. Keep the old plan running for a week so nothing is lost while the change spreads.

After the switch

A short list, worth doing the same day.

  • Confirm https works and the padlock shows.
  • Send and receive a test email in both directions.
  • Check your contact form arrives in the new mailbox.
  • Watch for 404 errors and fix any missed redirects.
  • Transfer the domain in as well, so hosting and domain renew together.

Or let us do it

Our engineers migrate websites and email free of charge, schedule the switch around your quiet hours and stay with it until everything is confirmed working.

Frequently asked questions

Will my site go offline during migration?
It should not. The site is live at both hosts during the switch, so visitors reach a working copy either way.
How long does a website migration take?
Most sites move within a day. DNS propagation can add a few hours, occasionally up to 48.
Do I have to transfer my domain to move hosting?
No. You can leave the domain where it is and point it at us, though transferring it keeps everything on one invoice.
