Connecting a domain to hosting is copying two lines of text into the right box. The only way to get hurt is to forget your email records — so we will cover those first.

Open your current DNS settings and write down every record, especially the MX records that route your email. If you change nameservers without recreating those, email stops arriving while the website looks perfectly fine.
Nameservers hand the whole domain to your host, which then manages every record for you. This is the simplest option and the one to choose unless you have a reason not to.
A records point only the website at your host's IP address while leaving other records where they are. Choose this when your email or another service must stay with a different provider.

Use the right one and DNS stops feeling mysterious.
Usually one to four hours, occasionally up to 24 or 48. Lower your record's TTL a day before a planned move so the change spreads faster, and keep the old hosting running for a week so nothing is lost.
The steps are identical wherever the domain is registered, including local registrars in Kenya and elsewhere — only the wording of the menu changes.
