How to choose the best web hosting provider for your website

Almost every host claims to be fast, secure and reliable. These are the questions that separate the ones that are from the ones that say so.

Ask about uptime, and what happens when it slips

An uptime commitment only means something if there is a remedy attached and monitoring behind it. Ask what the guarantee is, how it is measured, and what you receive if it is missed.

Judge speed by architecture, not adjectives

Three things account for most of the difference visitors can feel.

  • Fast NVMe storage rather than older spinning disks.
  • Caching configured at the server, not left to a plugin.
  • A content delivery network with locations near your audience.

Security should be included, not upsold

Free SSL on every domain, a web application firewall, malware scanning, isolated accounts and two-factor authentication on your billing login should all be standard. If any of these is a paid add-on, factor it into the price.

Backups are only useful if you can restore them

Ask how often backups run, how many days are retained, whether they are stored away from the live server, and whether you can restore one yourself without opening a ticket.

Renewal prices printed up front, free SSL and migration, daily backups, and 24-hour support from engineers.

Support: who answers, and when

There is a large difference between a script reader and an engineer. Ask what hours support is staffed, whether engineers are available directly, and how migrations and emergencies are handled.

Pricing you can still afford next year

Compare renewal prices, not introductory ones. Check the refund window, whether migration costs extra, and whether you can move up a plan without downtime.

The ten-question checklist

Send these to any provider you are considering, including us.

  • What is the renewal price on this exact plan?
  • What is the uptime guarantee and its remedy?
  • Is storage NVMe, and is caching server-level?
  • Is SSL free on every domain, forever?
  • How often do backups run and how far back do they go?
  • Can I restore a backup myself?
  • Is migration free, and who does it?
  • What hours is support staffed, and by whom?
  • Can I upgrade without rebuilding or downtime?
  • Where are your data centres, relative to my visitors?

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important thing when choosing a host?
Reliability and support. Speed can be tuned and plans can be upgraded, but an unreachable host during an outage costs you customers.
How do I know if a host is fast?
Look for NVMe storage, server-level caching and a CDN with locations near your visitors, then test a real page load after launch.
Is free migration really free?
At Ayuni Host, yes. Our engineers move your site and email at no charge.

Need a hand applying this?
